Today we bring you BASH & SASS! A adorable mini company who’s tagline is “modern apparel for the little minimalist”. UM….LOVE!
You know when you just read something and you feel like you would really connect with this person. That’s how we feel about Irene from BASH + SASS. We have met to meet you – but you just sound so cool! lol
Check out our Q&A with Bash + Sass and their gorgeous imagery!
1. Bash & Sass, super catchy name! Where did you come up with it?
My son Sebastian, a.k.a. “Bash,” is the inspiration behind why I started the line. 🙂 His first best friend is named Saskia, a.k.a. “Sass.” They were born just days apart and inseparable for their first year of life; it was the “Bash + Sass” show. I knew I wanted the line to be gender-neutral, so mixing in his name with hers was a perfect pairing.
2. Who is the team behind Bash & Sass?
I’ve always worked in a startup environment. For better or for worse, it’s taught me that wearing multiple hats is not only normal, it’s critical. The team behind Bash + Sass is mostly me, myself and I. I’m constantly switching hats to fulfill roles (design, marketing, social media, etc.) necessary in order to build a strong foundation for my brand. I’ve recently partnered with a PR firm though, Moderne Press , and am so excited to have their expertise and support moving forward. I also work with third party vendors to produce the line (i.e. pattern maker, clothing manufacturer).
3. What does Bash & Sass specialize in?
Bash + Sass specializes in quality, year-round modern basics (with a pop of fun!) made to reflect each child’s individuality and style. Each design reflects a minimalist aesthetic and includes an subtle edgy detail (i.e. asymmetric cut, thumbholes). We prioritize sustainability by sourcing our fabrics and manufacturing locally in California.
4. What made you want to start this company?
Becoming a mama really pushed me to make the jump. I left the corporate world (most recently working for Google) to carve a new career path that allows me the flexibility to spend time with my growing family. I wanted to do something creative on my own that I felt passionate about. Bash + Sass fulfills this more
than I thought possible, as my brand is an extension of myself, my style, and directly influenced by my kids. It’s beyond rewarding to work really hard at something so personal and know that it’s teaching and setting an example for my kids to go after their own dreams.
5. Can you share with us something you are most proud of to date with Bash & Sass?
To date, I’m most proud of just starting this company. It took me a long time to overcome the fears of leaving the stability and comforts of a corporate job and doing something on my own. Starting a clothing line was always a “dream” in the back of my head for years. I was an Art Director in the fashion industry
before I entered the tech world and loved the idea of potentially creating my own one day. I just never had the balls to do it. After becoming a mama, I knew if I didn’t do it for myself and to show my kids to go for what they feel passionate about, I would regret it forever.
6. What is one struggle you faced as a NEW company? How did you overcome it?
I’d definitely say some of the biggest struggles have been around production because this my first dive into the world of clothing. I don’t have a background in pattern making or textiles so to be honest, it’s like learning a whole new language. This definitely feels similar to when I had to learn how the development side of things worked in order to communicate my designs properly with engineers in the tech industry. I can’t just sketch or photoshop what I want and have it magically appear, because there are so many elements to consider (i.e. stretch, fit, how the fabrics drape). I’m thankful to have found kind and patient professionals in these areas to guide me through this oh-so-educational round of designing and producing apparel.
7. Fall is here, can you share with us any HOT products we must look out for!
Collection 2 is currently in production (yay!) and I’m so excited to debut it soon! You can expect to see our modern silhouettes with a few edgy detail changes and a NEW pullover style. The best part – Collection 2 will be made with super soft cotton stretch denim that has an urban appeal. It was a fun collection to design, so I hope you like it as much as we do. We’ll be introducing a new monster character, too!
8. What’s one thing you would like your customers to know about Bash & Sass?
Rule #1 for our brand is “Don’t forget to play.” I’m designing modern mini pieces that are stylish, functional and made for play. The basic silhouettes are simple with fun, subtle details that allow kids to be kids. I believe we should encourage our children to seek and discover new things in the world and about themselves whenever possible. Fun is the best fuel for learning. We support this rule while also prioritizing sustainability however possible. We’re very proud to say we manufacture our pieces in California and support local businesses.
9. Can you share with us a book you absolutely just read and loved recently?
Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls . I recently discovered this book from a friend and had to order it immediately. My daughter, Isa, is still a bit young to understand the stories, but I can’t wait to read it to her once she’s of age. It’s very inspiring and empowering, and I love it even as an adult!

10. One last thing, when it comes to your designs – where does your creativity/inspiration come from?
My kids and traveling are my primary inspirations. Bash is my pop of fun, which is a concept I directly translated into my line. With neutral-colored fabrics (the first collection is monochrome), I wanted to add a pop of fun and color in the mix. That’s how the idea of creating new monsters for each collection was
born. Kids clothing can be modern and minimalist, but why not also fun, right? The first monster is named “Babu.” Babu is a game that Bash made up when he could run, but barely speak. He would shout “Babu! Babu!” then chase his dad around in circles until he fell over laughing or got too dizzy…whichever came first. 😉
With the recent birth of my daughter, Isa, my design-thinking is evolving more. I will still create gender-neutral modern and edgy basics, but can see these ideas and details working for a simple dress or skirt now, too. It’s fun, inspiring and amazing to have both a boy and a girl. Isa, who is now 11 months, is really starting to show more of her personality. She’s usually quite calm (thank god!), but definitely flicks on the sassy switch when she wants something or gets hangry. I’m really excited to learn more about both of them as they grow and fold in their personalities into future clothing designs and monsters.
Traveling has always been a huge part of me. As a graphic/visual designer in my previous career/life, I’ve always found inspiration wherever I’ve gone, especially abroad, and made it a priority to hop on a plane for personal and design growth as much as possible. Now with 2 nuggets in tow, we’re not slowing down much and trying to instil that with our kids. Traveling with them and seeing the world through their eyes is beyond incredible and gives me fresh perspectives on things each time.
