Today on the blog we introduce to you a husband and wife team from Penticton, BC CANADA who are shipping their gorgeous natural products worldwide!
WORLD, Meet TIMBER CHILD!
1. Tell us a little bit about your brand!
We are a local husband and wife company located in Penticton, BC that makes natural lifestyle products for children and their families. We established Timber Child in November of 2016.
2. What made you want to open an online shop that features these types of products?
After having our daughter in February of 2016 we quickly realized that most of the products on the market meant for use on babies and children today contain dyes, chemicals, petroleum based products, SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) and parabens. We also found that it was close to impossible to find 100% natural, non toxic plates that did not contain plastic, melamine and weren’t finished without the use of petroleum based products such as the very popular mineral oil. We decided to make a few “plate like” trays for our little one and things just grew from there.
3. Why is it important to you to create 100% natural products?
Throughout our journey we have found that there is a increasing number of like minded parents, locally and globally for that matter, that are in search of the same things and lifestyle that we are. Most products sold today, create an alarming amount of unnecessary waste and I guess this is our little way of doing our part to reduce that waste. Most importantly we want to offer parents and grandparents a choice.
4. How did you come up with the name Timber Child?
James and I both love the mountains and outdoors. We figured the name Timber Child described the kind of brand we wanted our friends, family and customers to respond and relate to. We also felt that it portrayed the type of lifestyle we as a family strive to live.
5. Where do you come up with inspiration and ideas for your products?
Our daughter without question. As she grows and develops, so do our products. I think reading about the overwhelming levels of toxins, chemicals and synthetic materials in everyday items is something that will continue to inspire us.
6. What makes your brand unique?
All materials used to create our products are 100% Canadian and as locally sourced as possible. We use modern technology to recreate a newer version of traditional lifestyle products. Wooden plates and toys are not new by any means; our fun shapes and new spin on the design is what we feel makes us unique.
7. Do you have any advice for new parents?
I think everyone does the best they can with what they have and we’re not naive to think that everyone can afford a $20 wooden plate for their child. The only thing I would say to parents, is to perhaps try and educate themselves about our world and what’s in it. Read labels, research the chemicals and flame retardants in the car seats, play pens etc and think about where the products go when you’re finished with them. The more parents start talking about these issues the more likely their children will be to ask questions and to be aware of them as well. We are totally new to all of this and have A LOT to learn still and we’re just trying to do what we can to leave our spot here in the Okanagan a little better than we found it.
8. What do you want your customers to know?
How appreciative we are with the support and business that we’ve been receiving from everyone. We have had nothing but positive experiences with other local companies and are applying what we’ve learned from them into what we do. Thank You!!!
9. What motivates the most on ‘unmotivating’ days?
Our mortgage….haha That and the fact that we want our daughter to grow up in a household that encourages a healthy lifestyle, entrepreneurship and parents that keep pushing forward and don’t give up.
10. What is your favourite quote to motivate you?
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.”
“Study while others are sleeping; work while others are loafing; prepare while others are playing; and dream while others are wishing.”
-William Arthur Ward
